BVI Investment in China

September 17th, 2007

A while back I read a story that stated, “the BVI is the number two investor in China for new infrastructure.” For an island nation of approximately 25,000 people I find that completely overwhelming. Well, today I did a little further research because I find the topic fascinating and discovered that for the first eight months of 2007 $9.91 billion dollars from the British Virgin Islands was invested in China. If you would like to read the whole article you can have a look at the British Virgin Islands Business News.

Culebra Living

September 5th, 2007

Living on Culebra appears as though it will be quite different than living in the British Virgin Islands. Aside from the most obvious difference, they speak spanish in Culebra and English in Tortola, our new island home is quite a bit smaller with an estimated population of 3,000 (BVI population ~ 25,000). Also, for the four and a half years we were in Tortola I worked for the BVI government but here, as owners of the Palmetto Guesthouse, we are our own bosses and have been working everyday for the past 30 days.

Two quick updates for Saturday - While thinking about my upcoming (riveting) post for this Monday on cubicles I began wondering what the top destinations for self-important business conference types might be? A quick search online didn’t return as many “surveys” as I thought it would have (are you listening business travel writers??). However, one site, Business Travel had a short article from August 2006 entitled, “Readers Top Conference Cities” and the number one response was “someplace tropical” with 43.48% of the vote. Strangely enough, the second choice was “someplace hip” such as, San Francisco, Portland, or Seattle with 39.13%. “Someplace hip,” are you kidding me? I really think some groovy travel editor just makes this crap up and then publishes it as a reader survey.

Today we have our first guest writer here on mytropicalescape.com and they will be providing the finer details on the procedure associated with purchasing a home or property in the BVI (if you are not a citizen). These folks have purchased a home within the past couple of years so they are very well versed on the whole process.
