What a nice surprise to be featured in Islands Magazine this month in their “Ten Best Islands to Live On” article. Almost exactly one year ago Terrie and I purchased the Palmetto Guesthouse after living overseas for many years.
We are both originally from Massachusetts and we had the dream of owning our own business for many years and finally saw that goal come to fruition with the purchase of the Palmetto here on Culebra.
Our travels have taken us to Europe, Central and South America, the South Pacific, and of course, the Caribbean.
Palmetto Guesthouse Internet and Organic Coffee
September 10th, 2007
Our Culebra internet access should be improving very soon! Through a small miracle, and help from a friend on Puerto Rico, we finally managed to get a DSL router. That is half the battle… and our next step is to get the DSL service enabled at the Palmetto Guesthouse (once online I can write more in depth about this). Hopefully, the connection will be done by the end of this week and then Terrie and I, plus our guests, will have high-speed internet access.
Another quick update, we just picked up our first shipment of organic, fair trade coffee from Sweetwater Organic Coffee roasters in Florida. So, if you are a coffee fanatic coming to Culebra we can take care of your morning caffeine needs.
Packing
July 21st, 2007
I am working on making some updates to the Palmetto Guesthouse website and packing the last of our belongings before we move up to Culebra. The story on traveling with pets will get posted on Monday.
Birthday
July 19th, 2007
Today is my birthday. I can’t remember exactly when but I happened to see an interview (can’t remember with who) where the person being interviewed said,” if you have not started your life’s work by the time you reach forty, you probably won’t.” I agreed with what the person was saying and had hoped to complete certain goals before turning 40:
British Virgin Islands to Culebra

Some people have inquired as to how we are going to get everything to Culebra (to the Palmetto Guesthouse) without spending a fortune on a container for shipping? My answer -
Closing on the Palmetto Guesthouse
June 22nd, 2007
You may have noticed from the brief [June 20] post below, it is now official, as of June 20, 2007 we own the Palmetto Guesthouse on Culebra. Remember, this post ONLY discusses the closing, so as you read through and get near the end of the day and you see how we have to race around keep in mind that we have had NINE months of this. Also, although I make light of the situation below this purchase would have never have happened if it was not for the efforts of our attorney, Ignacio, Sara at Metro Island Mortgage, Joe, and Sandra Wagner of Blue Horizon Realty who stuck with us when most other realtors would have been laughing at us. If you are looking to buy on Culebra we highly recommend her. Post starts now.
We Own The Palmetto Guesthouse
June 20th, 2007
After a very long day which started at 4:00a.m. Terrie and I finally own the boutique lodging on Culebra know as the Palmetto Guesthouse. It seems really strange and somewhat surreal to think that we are now homeowners and business owners, or business owners and homeowners, depending on how you choose to look at it. However, when I catch a glimpse of the monthly mortgage and hazard insurance payments, I get snapped back to reality very quickly.
