Greetings everyone! How are you? As some of you might know I have recently returned from Nicaragua and now I am ready to get back to work.

(more nicaragua photos coming soon!)

I have quite a bit that I would like to accomplish this coming week and I thought that you might too.

Before I went away I received some really constructive feedback on a project that I am working on and I would like to see others out there getting support and constructive input for whatever they might like to accomplish. With this post I would like to know:

What are your goals for this coming week? What would you like to accomplish?

  1. Do you hope to help someone?
  2. Find venture capital?
  3. Write an ebook?
  4. Blog more frequently?
  5. Open a bank account
  6. Register a domain name?
  7. Drink less coffee?
  8. Start an exercise program?

My hope is that we can help to motivate one another and keep each other on task for the remainder of the week by reporting our progress or lack there of. :)

To make it easier I will even go first. My goals for the week are:

  • Implement some of the constructive changes that were recommended for my upcoming launch.
  • Investigate conference calling options on the internet.
  • Successfully structure my organization’s board.
  • Write four blog posts to help promote my small business (on culebrablog).
  • Stick to my triathlon workout schedule.

Now, how about you, what are your goals for the week? If you know of someone that might benefit from this exercise…send them on over.

  1. Brian Monahan, Expert in the Rough Says:

    Mark,

I have a few for this week.

Create a birthing plan with my wife, we are under two months and we need get our ducks in a row.

Create a workout plan. 3 different types of exercise a week minimum. Such as basketball, weights, running.

Cleanup basement with my new storage bins.

    Hi Mark

    What a great idea! I have 3…

    1. Last week I moved into my boyfriend’s apartment and we are living amongst boxes. This week I need to unpack all of my things and not just get home from work and flake out on the couch!
    2. I’ve worked out how much money I am spending by buying breakfast everyday. I need to save some cash by bringing in breakfast to the office from home. I should be able to save about $25 a week if I can do it (which is scarily $1300 a year!)
    3. I need to ride my bike into work twice

  3. Mark Says:

Hi Brian - under two months…yeah it sounds like a birthing plan is in order. :) Also, I am right there with you on the exercise plan! For me, maintenance mode is over and I need to get into some serious training as my triathlon event is November 9th.

Hey Kelly - moving can be stressful, eh? And then, the unpacking! For the breakfast, I always used to bring cereal in a tupperware to save money for breakfast and I would try to bring lunch too. Those dollars you spend on meals definitely add up. How far is your work if you are planning to bike?

  4. kazari Says:

    Great post!
    I want to
    1. write 4 blog posts (not all in the same blog),
    2. get some necessary, but tardy, paperwork to the accountant, and
    3. get up early enough to walk to work.

That’s about it really - good luck with your goals!

  5. Glen Allsopp Says:

    I hope to:

    - Write 2 more blog posts on Saturday / Sunday
    - Write a traffic / stats update tomorrow for my blog
    - Get all my tasks at work completed
    - Go to the gym at least twice :)

    Cheers,
    Glen!

  6. Mark Says:

Hi Kazari - what are the posts about that you will be writing? Do you typically walk to work?

Hey Glen - how is the traffic going for your new site? Only twice to the gym?? :)

  7. Diana Says:

    Hallo Mark,
great idea - and it definitely helps to add some accountability to the weekly goal-list…
For some of the things I also add when I intend to do them.

    work:
    - keep my to-do-list and desk organized
    - get the new website online
    - write / review the concepts for 3 events

    other:
    - get up before 8 a.m. (even if it’s just 7.59…)
    - keep up my good work-out-habits (either ride my bike to work or go for a run)
    - review and post an already existing blog text (tonight)
    - finally write an e-mail that I should have written weeks ago… (tonight)
    - make an appointment with a friend (today or tomorrow) to go and buy a used guitar for me (on Friday or Saturday)
    - find a guitar-teacher (Wednesday)
    - cancel my web-hosting-service and switch to a new one (Friday)

Have a good week all of you.
    Diana

  8. Kelly Says:

    Hi Mark
I am about 10K / 20 min from work, so it’s not too hard. And when I do it, I really enjoy it…
I have cereal all lined up so no excuse!

  9. Mark Says:

Hi Diana - nice list! What is your new website about? And do you write event reviews for your job? Best of luck to you getting up before 8:00…I am an early riser and have trouble staying up past 8:00. :)

Hi Kelly - the world sure would be a fitter place if we all walked 10k to work everyday. :)

  10. Mark Says:

What typically keeps you all motivated?

  11. Jarkko Laine Says:

Nice idea, Mark! And welcome back to the blogosphere :)

    My goals for this week:
    - get some more sleep
    - get started with 2-3 interviews for my “insanely interesting September”
    - finish the first of my creativity experiments
    - finish one blog post for nxe
    - run 3 times

Thanks for this opportunity to make myself more accountable! Have a great week, everyone! Let’s get some tasks done :)

  12. Jarkko Laine Says:

@Kelly: How do you walk 10 kilometers in 20 minutes?

  13. Ulla Hennig Says:

    My goals for this week:
    - write three blog posts
    - go to my Yoga lesson on Wednesday
    - get on with decluttering.

  14. Mark Says:

Hi Jarkko - happy to see you are still running! Will you keep it up into the winter? Who will you be interviewing for your interview series?

Hi Ulla - do you only go to Yoga once a week? How long have you been practicing?

  15. Jarkko Laine Says:

@Mark: Yeah, I’ll try to keep going throughout the winter (I’m not that good at ski’ing ;)

From what I’ve heard, running in the fall can actually be rather nice, when it’s cold, dark and raining - as long as you have the right gear. So, I guess I’m going to find out if it’s true or not.

For the interview series, I have a few ideas… But I haven’t asked them yet, so I guess I’ll wait a bit longer before announcing the names. But you’ll be the first to hear.

  16. Glen Allsopp Says:

I just realised that you had linked to me in the post, thanks a lot.

Regarding traffic, I’ll be posting the stats tomorrow but around 19k visitors and 33k pageviews. 160 subscribers so far as well so for 5 weeks in I really can’t complain ;)

Only twice in the gym because I went yesterday and I’m on a bulk at the moment so getting used to the new routine.

    Keep up the good work!

    Cheers,
    Glen

  17. Diana Says:

    @Mark:
It’s not a genuinely new website, but the complete make-over of the site of the company I work for (a small event agency). Just send the text to our web-admin… :) Can almost tick that off the list. Yippie.

  18. Becky Says:

Great idea! This week I need to:

    1. Get my savings account set up;
    2. Finalize a new collaborative project at work
    3. Write my column
    4. Get my new routine established (start of school year)

I think the sticking with the new routine will be the hardest. It usually takes me 2-3 weeks to really get in the grove…

  19. Kelly@SHE-POWER Says:

    Mark, you’re back - yay!

My goals for this week are minimal because I’m going to Melbourne on Friday for a few days sans child and hubby.

    Free, yippee!

But I do have 5 goals.
    1. Join the local writers centre where I live now so I have the opportunity to meet some writers and join a support group
    2. Run and/or box every day this week so I can slip into my little black dress for the party I’m going to on the weekend
    3. Finish reading the second draft of my novel (almost done) and complete my character profiles
    4. Finalise the plot overview of the third draft and work on the structure for the first Act so I can start writing next week
    5. Write one more blog post for SHE-POWER before I go away

Plus keep up with the usual work/family stuff.

Hmm, it looks like I’ll be having a couple of writing nights before I go away…

    Kelly

  20. Kelly@SHE-POWER Says:

Actually looking at that, number 4 looks kinda ambitious. Hopefully if it doesn’t happen in next 3 days, the plot changes can get nutted out in transit to Melbourne and back.

    Kelly

  21. Mark Says:

Hey Diana - congrats with getting that item done!

Hi Becky - I can’t wait to write about trying to setup a bank account for my new project…it literally almost stopped me in my tracks out of frustration. So, I wish you well on that front, although, if you don’t find yourself on an island it should be much easier. :) Also, good luck sticking to your routine over the next two or three weeks…I am right there with you!

  22. Mark Says:

Hi Kelly! Thanks for the welcome back. My guest post over at Zen Habits was a little warm-up :) It seems as though you are on fire this week. Do you find writer’s groups helpful? How much running are you doing? And, will you be releasing your novel as an ebook? Or, shopping it around to agents?

  23. Success Professor Says:

Mark, great idea. I set several goals in each important role in my life. I use this 6 step system to set my weekly goals:

    http://successprofessor.ca/2008/07/29/six-steps-to-plan-
    your-week-for-success/

For this week here are a few of my goals and their connected roll:

    1. Professor - Catch up on summer marking
    2. Blog - Write and publish 3 articles, and 2 guest articles
    3. Church - catch up on bookkeeping (volunteer)
    4. Husband - Help my wife host BBQ for her students
    5. Home Business - Enroll 2 new customers and give them free IPod Shuffle
    6. Personal Development - Fast for one day
    7. Home Owner - spend two hours cleaning storage room.

I’ll try to report back throughout the week!

  24. Mark Says:

Hey Success Professor - what a great plan! What subject do you teach? And do you fast for one day every week? Is it helpful?

  25. Mark Says:

@everyone - ticking one thing off my list! For the conference call I am going with - https://www.freeconferencecall.com/ seems like a pretty good service.

  26. Success Professor Says:

    @ Mark
    - I teach business. Pretty much touch on every area of business at this point.

    - I do not fast every week, it’s more of a periodic thing. It makes a significant difference in my life. From my personal faith perspective it provides me great opportunities to connect with God. It has been amazing to see continued answers to prayer on the items that I pray about while fasting.

    - I’ve used http://www.freeconferencecall.com for some time and I’ve found it very good.

  27. Glen Allsopp Says:

Ticking one of my list as well, here is my stats post:

    http://www.pluginid.com/pluginid-august-08/

I wrote a thank you in there for you marc :)

  28. Jarkko Laine Says:

    Reporting on my goals:
    - Last night I slept more than normally. Felt good (but I’m still a bit more tired than I should)
    - Sent out three interview requests (one already accepted, so I’m sending out the questions soon)
    - Creativity experiment is not going as well as planned… I’ll need to iterate on it tomorrow.

    …more coming up…

  29. Susan Says:

    1. To work on installing a BI system for the co.
    2. To get on my treadmill for 30 minutes each day
    3. Spend time teaching my sons.
    4. Improve my typing skills

  30. Cath Lawson Says:

Hi Mark - It looks like you have a busy week ahead. And you’re also training for a triathlon. That’s brilliant - when is it?

I have way too many things to do this week.

    1) High on my list is chasing up a lot of money I’m owed from various places. This is v high, as I lost heaps when I wound up my last business.

    2) Sell some more stuff on ebay and amazon, as I
made a good amount of cash last week.

    3) Carry on with a new project I’m working on.

    4) Type some of my novel back onto computer as
someone hacked me and messed it up a bit.
Luckily I’d just printed it out to edit.

    5) Start exercising again - I’ve lapsed a bit since
    I got back from Mexico.

  31. Mark Says:

Hi Jarkko - nice to see your progress! Do you not sleep that much? Usually I can’t stay up past 9:00 but recently I have been working into the night. Also, feel good because I am sticking to my workout schedule.

  32. Mark Says:

Hi Susan - what is a BI? (Excuse my ignorance.) Best of luck getting on the treadmill! Have you been away from it for a while?

Hi Cath - my week doesn’t look half as busy as yours! My triathlon is November 9 in Miami. Do you actually make money on ebay? I always thought that would be difficult to do consistently. When do you expect your novel to be done?

  33. Al at 7P Says:

    Hi Mark,

I’d have to say my goal for this week is to get back on my routine. Vacation tends to throw me off and it can be hard to get back the momentum.

    Also, welcome back!

  34. Mark Says:

Hey Al - good luck getting back into the swing!

@everyone - update from my end - having a solid week working out. Biked yesterday and plan for a run and swim today. Also making some good progress getting ready for the launch next week.

YOU - how are you coming along this week?

  35. Mark Says:

    * Thursday update - held first board meeting today for our new organization and we launch next Tuesday!!

  36. Success Professor Says:

    @ everyone

I’ve completed a few of my goals for the week. #4, #5, and #6 are completed. I’m working on the others over the next day or two!
