So I Ask - What the Hell Are You?

Yesterday I met this person and their personality had a repulsive air that can best be described as a glaringly obvious faker. I wish I could say the person was abrasive but it was subtler.

Why are you faking it?

Personally, I don’t give two hoots about the person but for some reason fate put us in contact and here is the general gist of the conversation:

Me – How are you?

Person – I am an environmentalist

Me – Weathers nice huh?

Person – I am an environmentalist.

Me – Have you been here before?

Person – I am an environmentalist?

Here is where it gets good!

Me – So, what do you do for work (although I already had a pretty good idea what was coming)?

Person – I am an environmentalist (said with an air of snobbery like I am some kind of idiot for not hearing it before…)

Me – Oh, you don’t say, I have a Masters in Environmental Information Systems. For the past five years I was working in the British Virgin Islands mapping the health of the coral reef habitat. Before that I lived in Samoa dealing with the environment and coastal management issues and of course it all started with a stint in the Peace Corps in New Guinea living in the Lakekamu Basin rainforest (one of the largest remaining tracks of virgin lowland forest in the Pacific).

Person – Do you know where I can buy some organic chocolate for my chai latte?

*rant over*

If you feel so inclined, please go ahead and  introduce yourself. Somehow, even with my little hiatus I have managed to keep a couple of hundred subscribers and I would like to say THANKS for sticking around.

Also, I am looking for some new juice for my RSS reader so if you have the time introduce yourself below in the comments section and feel free to leave the link to your site or your RSS feed. Chai lattes will be served on a first come first served basis.

If you thought that was good, and if you would like to read more posts like how Seth Godin thinks Tim Ferriss is a LIAR, go on and sign up for my RSS FEED.

ps. thanks to Shana, Jarkko, Lid, Mark, Patrick, Hockey Guru, Simply Steven, JessicaLaurie, Koka, and the others for stumbling my first post back! I appreciate it.

Well, if you’re looking for something about web design, creativity, or productivity, you might try my blog.

I’m glad to see that you’re back blogging!

PS: I am a web designer. ;-)

Mark:

I like where you blog is going.

Yeah. You never know who you are talking to.

Let me introduce myself to your wonderful readers.

I was an awarded national IT consultant in USA doing large scale database consulting. I came to USA for my master degree in Interactive Computer Graphics in the Technology field. I became an animator and created a 3D game a while back. I have bachelor degree in Biology and have done molecular biology and DNA sequencing in the hospital for two years prior coming to USA. I was a paratrooper and ranger in the Army.

I was a bad boy. It took me three years to pass the exam and get into college. I was a break dancer and broke my back. I was also the chairman of Chinese Martial Art Club in the university.

I share the same name of the producer of Tom Cruise “Mission Impossible” movies. I direct my own little TaiChi Martial Art clips a while back. I play a small role in a popular TV show in Taiwan when I was in high School.

Now I am a self-motivated business owner and working on my own. I dream to make enough money to support my dream to travel around the world and helping people with my Charity work.

I recently started a happiness project to build the happiest blog in the world at SmileMyDay.com.

I am hoping to collect million happy smiles that make my day. I am hoping to see the smile photo of your readers as well.

I think this is long enough! :-)

Thanks for thanking! :) And guess what… I’m stumbling this one too. Like Terence says above (no, I didn’t read the whole comment, just the few lines from the beginning and then went to click on his link), you really have found a nice drive for this blog now that you’re back. Way to go!

Hi Joshua - It’s good to be back! Unlike the person referred to in the little anecdote *YOU* actually have design skills and credentials :)

Hi Terence - GREAT story. And I never knew you were a TV star with director credentials and an Army Ranger.

Hi Jarkko - Funny, you guys are all already in my RSS reader. I thought I would try to drive out some lurkers and discover some new websites that I can support at the same time.

#5 Ross Hill on 03.12.08 at 9:39 pm

Drive out lurkers? Haha. Ok.

I’m Ross. I’m studying the final year of the Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) at RMIT in Melbourne. I live an hour from there in Geelong, a bit closer to the surf beaches of the Great Ocean Road.

I run a few websites - the most popular right now are the cd cover search site CoverHunt.com, and a blog where I interview entrepreneurs at Hatchthat.com. The rest are linked on my personal site at RossHill.com.au.

I’m just playing around with a few ideas in my final year of uni and we’ll see what sticks at the end :)

I found your blog because of some Tim Ferriss mention, it sounds like what you’re doing is pretty cool. I’ve travelled all around Australia, and a bit of Western Europe but I’m looking forward to seeing Thailand in June.

#6 Mark on 03.13.08 at 4:47 am

Hi Ross - Welcome :)

I spent quite a bit of time in Australia when I lived in Papua New Guinea but never made it to Melbourne.

Cheers on starting your path to entrepreneurship so early! I am off to check out your websites.

#7 Lid on 03.15.08 at 1:49 am

Hey Mark - Thanks for the thanks :)

I too am so glad you’re back - just wait up for me, I promise I’m catching up :)

#8 sarah on 03.15.08 at 2:36 am

Hi Mark, I found you through Skellie and I’m glad I did. My husband and I are navigating our way towards a lifestyle that makes more sense to us so I’m glad to find anyone doing the same. Looking forward to more posts from you.

I’m over at teatreeandrest.blogspot.com where I write about spirituality & family. I’d love for you to come over and while you’re at it, delurk yourself.

#9 Mark on 03.15.08 at 11:06 am

Hi Lid - I need to catch up to you! Your site is on fire…with over 100 comments on one post.

#10 Mark on 03.15.08 at 11:13 am

Hi Sarah - Welcome, and thank you for stopping by. What type of lifestyle are you and your husband hoping to create? Please let me know if I can provide any assistance or input.

Hmmm, I guess “drive out lurkers” was a poor choice of words :) But, it sort of worked because out of the couple of hundred subscribers I have now met you and Ross (above). The other folks I have been lucky enough to know.
