Are You Living Everyday?

November 12th, 2007

Are you living your best life everyday? This post comes with no tips, no hacks, and no quick fix recommendations, it just simply asks, are you living your best life?

Recently, I was at the airport waiting for a flight and while I was looking around just passing the time I noticed a family of about five who seemed to have been patiently waiting just like everyone else who was waiting to leave after their vacation.

The family certainly seemed normal with a couple of pre-teen kids listening to IPODS and the slightly older teenage sisters looking aloof and embarrassed that they were in public with their uncool family. I continued to sit waiting for my flight and looking aimlessly around but for some reason my eyes and thoughts were brought back to that family. Something just did not seem right. Upon one last glance I noticed the mother of the family looked a little weak and frail. Too, another detail that I had previously overlooked, the mom was wearing one of those colorful knitted caps that people sometimes wear when receiving cancer treatment.

Certainly, they appeared to be happy but there was a sort of an intangible melancholy depression hovering among the group. Did the mom have cancer? Was it terminal? It also made me wonder if this was expected to be their last family vacation together? In that instant and the thought that this would be their last vacation as a family it felt like someone literally had punched me in the stomach.

Soon after, my flight was called for boarding and I was off to get on the plane. I sat in the plane and thought about that family for quite a while. Truthfully, it made me realize that we are faced with the choice everyday of whether we choose to live our lives and be active by pursuing goals and challenging ourselves. The alternatives being that we become a person who chooses to passively exist, remain in the status quo and simply go through the motions.

As my flight continued and I wrote down my thoughts about the experience I also decided to think about some queries that can help to assist the thought process when pondering the question, “Are you living life everyday?”

  • Are you happy where you presently are at in life, in your job, etc?
  • Are you doing the things that you want to be doing?
  • Are you stuck someplace, or in a situation that you do not want to be in?
  • Are you complacent about (positive) change?
  • Do you attempt to have some form of joy everyday?
  • Could you go peacefully and without regret?

Personal happiness is a state of mind but I also try to treat it like a goal. In order for us to achieve any goal, including LIVING life, we must make it a priority, everyday. Do something positive today, everyday, for yourself and for someone else.

    I agree with you!
I believe I’m happy! Sure, I have financial problems, I have stress… but when it comes down to it I am VERY happy. What you say about happiness being a state of mind is so true.
It always cheers me up when I make other people feel good. (I make their day).
The response I get from people when I approach them in a good/happy mood, is amazing! I find that being an optimist really helps as well. When it comes down to it, I make a conscious decision whether I’m happy or not. I count the things I have, and not the things I don’t have.
Also I know that the Jesus is on my side, and will NEVER give me anything I cannot handle.

    Good post, Thanx
