What did you do this weekend?
July 15th, 2007
I REALLY like living in the Caribbean, and I am certainly going to miss the British Virgin Islands. Luckily, we are only moving about 30 miles away. What does that have to do with the post title? This weekend I was supposed to do more of this - PACKING

Travel scams
July 13th, 2007
Recently, I heard a story about a friend’s mother here in the British Virgin Islands who was ripped off at an ATM while withdrawing some funds. The person did not realize that scam artists had placed a false front card-skimming device over the machine’s card reader. Unsuspectingly, after inserting the bankcard the person using the ATM had their banking information collected via a magnetic card reader and then the stolen data was transmitted back to the perpetrator. Within a week or so the unaware victim received a notice from the bank saying that the account balance was zero and that they had traced unauthorized purchases on their card to Jamaica. After hearing this story, and because the summer travel season is upon us, I thought I would do a little research and post some information on travel scams and rip-offs.
Cool Bed
July 11th, 2007
No, really. It has been so oppressively hot in the British Virgin Islands lately that you seem to sweat if you are eating breakfast in the morning, when you are trying to sleep, or even while just standing and doing nothing at all.
Top Business Travel Destinations
July 7th, 2007
Two quick updates for Saturday - While thinking about my upcoming (riveting) post for this Monday on cubicles I began wondering what the top destinations for self-important business conference types might be? A quick search online didn’t return as many “surveys” as I thought it would have (are you listening business travel writers??). However, one site, Business Travel had a short article from August 2006 entitled, “Readers Top Conference Cities” and the number one response was “someplace tropical” with 43.48% of the vote. Strangely enough, the second choice was “someplace hip” such as, San Francisco, Portland, or Seattle with 39.13%. “Someplace hip,” are you kidding me? I really think some groovy travel editor just makes this crap up and then publishes it as a reader survey.

Pardon me, is that an arrow in your head?
July 4th, 2007
Imagine if you will, that you have survived three months of Peace Corps brainwashing training in the beautiful Papua New Guinea Highland’s town known as Goroka. With training finished you and your unbridled enthusiasm head for the airport to get on a plane that looks like a tin can with an engine to make your way to your new village where you will spend the next two years.
Moving Overseas
July 3rd, 2007
Recently I got an email requesting some information about moving overseas so I thought I would do a quick post. Most importantly, before moving overseas I think there are four or five critical questions you should ask yourself:
Buying a home in the British Virgin Islands
July 3rd, 2007
Today we have our first guest writer here on mytropicalescape.com and they will be providing the finer details on the procedure associated with purchasing a home or property in the BVI (if you are not a citizen). These folks have purchased a home within the past couple of years so they are very well versed on the whole process.
