Moving Overseas

July 3rd, 2007

Recently I got an email requesting some information about moving overseas so I thought I would do a quick post. Most importantly, before moving overseas I think there are four or five critical questions you should ask yourself:

1. Why – do you want to move overseas? I have heard that moving is one of the most stressful events that can take place in person’s life. Now multiply that stress by 100 because that is what you are in for.

2. How – will you support yourself? Do you need to work? Can you work legally at your new destination?

3. What - is attractive about your new home destination? Most people recommend doing a PMV (pre move visit) before committing to an overseas move and I too would support that recommendation.

4. Are - you ready to be far away from family and friends (support network)? Or, the opposite, are you a little too excited to be far away from relatives and colleagues?

5. Finally, do you have the financial means to support yourself while getting settled? Depending on your lifestyle and family size you could be looking at a $10,000 expense.

Hope this was helpful! At present I am working on a post about how to determine where you should move to overseas and it should be ready in the next week or so.
